Stress Symbols

Lithuanian has three stress symbols:
kairinis (grave): à è  ò ù.
dešininis (acute): á     ý  .
riestinis (tilde): ã  ẽ    ỹ ũ     ñ .

The kairinis symbol indicates that a vowel is pronounced shortly (à - up, è - net,  - pick, ò, ù - book).

The dešininis symbol, as well as the riestinis, indicates a long vowel (á, ã, ,  - father; , ẽ, ,  - cat; ,  - ray; , , ý, ỹ - peel; , - mall; , , ,  - fool).

Diphthongs have a slightly different accentation:
a, a, añ, a - gulf, bum, gun, blur.
e, e, eñ, e - fell, gem, lens, error.
i, i, iñ, i, l, m, n, r - bill, gym, gin, irreducible.
u, u, uñ, u, ùl, ùm, ùn, ùr - pull, etc.
ál, ám, án, ár - car, etc.
l, m, n, r - Al, famine, man, narrow.
úo - wah.
e - year
a, e, aũ - hey, no.
