Vocative Case with Female Names

28 September 2013 by Pigmalijonas

As you remember, Lithuanians have a special case for greeting. This is how you should address women who are called Milda, Dovilė and Dalia:

Labas, Milda!
Sveika, Dovile!
Laba diena, Dalia!

As you see, the ending has changed only in Dovilė.

Often female words that end in a are stressed in the last syllable. For example, mama is stressed in the last syllable, but when you address mama, the stress jumps to the first syllable:

Mama, kur tu? (Mother, where are you?)

Word Meaning
labas 1. hello
2. hi
laba diena good afternoon
