You have probably noticed that the stem of verbs is not always the same:

pirkti, perka, pirko
turėti, turi, turėjo
sakyti, sako, sakė

You will have to know these three principal forms by heart:

1) the infinitive (pirkti),
2) the present tense (perka),
3) and the past tense (pirko).

pirkti, perka, pirko
eiti, eina, ėjo
kalbėti, kalba, kalbėjo
gyventi, gyvena, gyveno
etc

It is absolutely necessary to memorize them, because the principle forms are used to make other forms of verbs.

Mano brolis važiuoja gyventi į Vokietiją. My brother is driving to live in Germany.
Ši futbolininkė gyvena Lietuvoje. This football player lives in Lithuania.
Šie darbininkai niekada negyveno Anglijoje. These workers have never lived in England.
Aš visada gyvenau Lietuvoje. I always lived in Lithuania.
