Nationalities

Some lessons ago you learned some country names. Now we will see how to call the natives of these countries:

Airija: airis - Irish
Amerika: amerikietis - American
Anglija: anglas - English
Argentina: argentinietis - Argentinian
Australija: australas - Australian
Baltarusija: baltarusis - Belarussian
Belgija: belgas - Belgian
Brazilija: brazilas - Brazillian
Estija: estas - Estonian
Ispanija: ispanas - Spanish
Italija: italas - Italian
Kanada: kanadietis - Canadian
Latvija: latvis - Latvian
Lenkija: lenkas - Polish
Lietuva: lietuvis - Lithuanian

Note that country names start with a capital letter (Rusija), but nationalities are not capitalized (rusas).

There are two rules how to make a nationality word:

The first rule is for those countries that have an affix ija: Anglija, Latvija, Rusija, Kinija (China), etc. For these countries you just have to drop the affix ija and add the ending as: anglas, latvis, rusas, kinas...

However vokietis (a German) and baltarusis (a Belarussian) have the ending is.

The second rule is for all the other countries that do not end with the affix ija: Amerika, Argentina, Kanada, Singapūras, etc. For these countries you must drop their ending (a or as) and add the affix ietis: amerikietis, argentinietis, kanadietis, singapūrietis...
