Stressing paradigms There are four ways how to stress a noun. The first way (1st paradigm) is always stressing the noun in the stem: lempa
lempos
The second way (2nd paradigm) is mainly stressing the noun in the stem, but sometimes in the ending: pieštukas
pieštukai
The third way (3rd paradigm) is sometimes stressing the noun in the stem, but mainly in the ending: kambarys
kambariai
And finally the fourth way (4th paradigm) is like the 3rd, but it has even more stressing in the ending: stalas
stalai
Each Lithuanian word is stressed just by one of the paradigms above. So when you learn a new word, you should also memorize its stressing paradigm. In most dictionaries, the number of a paradigm should be next to a word, for example: lempa (1), pieštukas (2), kambarys (3), stalas (4). In other lessons we will cover all the four ways of stressing. You may go to the next lesson or to the lesson index. |
