I am having difficulties understanding the usage of the word 'kol'.

Palaukite, kol aš ateisiu
Describes the time until I arrive, right?

Palaukite, kol aš valgau
Describes the time while I am eating, right?

So is it the tense of the verb that decides if it's before or during the action?

Like...

Kol aš valgau
Describes the time I am eating. (English 'while')

Kol aš valgysiu
Describes the time up until I will eat. (English 'until')

Could this be or am I totally lost as usual?

Please, enlighten me.

And If I'm totally wrong (nemaža tikimybė) could you please give me some examples of how this word's meaning can change in different sentences?

Thank you.

Yes, indeed the tense of the verb determines if it is before or during the action.

While I could live with Palaukite, kol valgau, it still sounds a bit strange to me. I'd say Palaukite, kol pavalgysiu (= wait unitl I finish eating). Then both examples acquire the same tense and aspect.

Kol means that something must be (continually) done or a state maintained until the action in the other clause starts if it is in the perfective aspect. In your example, the action described by the verb Palaukite must be carried on until Ateisiu or Pavalgysiu happens. I assume it's OK to use kol in this sense.

Kol means that something must be (continually) done or a state maintained while the action in the other clause continues if it is in the imperfective aspect. In your example, the action described by the verb Palaukite must be carried on as long as Valgau continues. I doubt, however, if it is logical to use kol in this way.
