I communicate occasionally by email with two native speakers of Lithuanian. They invariably address me as "Jonai." Yet my grammar and my dictionary indicate that the vocative singular of 1st declension nouns should end in "-e" not "-ai." One of my correspondents is Virgimantas. Should I address him as "Virgimantai" or "Virgimante"?

Can someone explain the discrepancy and which is correct?

Labas Jonai,

True, nouns that end with -as is changed to -e, but PERSONAL NAMES that end with -as is changed to -ai. There are some exceptions to this rule, but you will find all the needed info if you follow this link...

PS Virgimantai is the correct version DS

And you can also see that in this lesson:

Thank you both. Very interesting. In Latin, a very similar language in structure and form, the vocative is the same for both common and proper nouns and the endings are the same in both the nominative and vocative (with a few exceptions.)

The vocative is the same for both common and proper nouns in Lithuanian too. The only exception (correct me if I'm wrong) is the masculine nouns that end with -as.

Also the endings are the same in both the nominative and vocative in plural. It's "just" singular that change...

Don't go too fast. The fact that most of them are written the same, doesn't mean that they are as well pronunced the same. You must keep in mind accentuation differences when saying that they are the same.
All in all, as for e/ai is not the only change.

Latin only has a distinct vocative form for 2nd declension singular nouns ending in -us and -ius. This category corresponds to the Lithuanian 1st declension (both derive from the I-E "o-stem" nouns), where the nominative endings have become "-as", "-is", "-ys".

So Latin has "-us" -> "-e", where Lithuanian has "-as" to "-e". It's a striking reminder that the two languages are cousins.
